Ayurvedic Eye Care: Improving Vision, Well-Being and addressing Eye Problems

Introduction to Ayurveda for Eye Care:

Often referred to as the science of life, Ayurveda goes beyond merely addressing diseases and includes measures to treat eye issues. It emphasizes the holistic well-being of individuals and provides insights into maintaining good health through daily routines and seasonal practices. One crucial aspect of Ayurveda is Dinacharya, a set of daily rituals for ayurvedic remedies that, when followed correctly, helps establish balance in an individual's constitution, regulating the biological clock and improving the gaze.

Ayurvedic Treatment: An approach to treating Eye Diseases:

In the realm of Ayurveda, considered as an effective treatment in eye hospitals, the eyes hold a special place as one of the most vital organs contributing to our social and intellectual development. Nearly 80% of the knowledge we gain is through our eyes. Ayurvedic eye treatments, such as Netra Anjana, take a holistic approach to improve eyesight and promote eye health.

Netra Anjana: A Holistic Ayurvedic Treatment for Eye Diseases:

Netra Anjana is a special Ayurvedic treatment designed to address various eye disorders in eye hospitals. Ayurvedic remedies involve the application of medicine in the form of Gutika, Raskriya, or Churna to the inner side of the lower lid for eye problems. This can be done using either fingertips or an applicator for relieving eye issues.

Mode of Application of Kajal:

Kajal, an integral part of Ayurvedic eye care, is applied from the inner canthus to the outer canthus on the inner part of the eyelid or palpebral conjunctiva. It is essential to avoid application during midday when eyes are fatigued by strong sunlight. After applying kajal, perform eye exercises such as gentle movements of the eyeballs and eyelids to help spread it to all areas.

Indications and Contraindications:

Kajal application is indicated for refractive errors, watery eyes, dry eyes, itching, eye strain, and eye edema. However, it is contraindicated in cases of fatigue, excessive lacrimation, alcoholism, anger, fear, fever, suppression of natural urges, and head disorders. It should be avoided during periods of less sleep, windy days, exposure to dust and smoke, eye discharge, and after specific therapeutic procedures.

Method of Preparation of Ayurvedic Kajal:

In ayurveda for eye care, homemade kajal preparation involves dipping a clean muslin cloth in sandalwood paste or Alstonia scholaris(Manjal karisilanganni) juice, drying it in the shade, and using it as a wick for a mud lamp filled with castor oil to improve eye health. The lamp is burned overnight, and the soot collected is mixed with ghee or castor oil, then stored for use.

Conclusion: Ayurvedic eye care, with its holistic approach, not only addresses eye disorders but also contributes to overall well-being. Incorporating Ayurvedic practices like Netra Anjana and Kajal application into daily routines can enhance vision and maintain eye health, aligning with the principles of Ayurveda – the science of life.
